I bought the A & D of the Larsen Magnacore Arioso Cello set mainly because I have been on a seemingly eternal quest to find a satisfactory sound with the D string. The D sounds so dull, dark and lifeless compared to the gorgeous light coming from the A. I reasoned that this new combination of steel over braided steel might change this situation.
What I found is that the D is better than average in this regard, but that the Pirastro Permanent Soloist Medium still sounds a bit better. I would like to see further experimentation with different metals in the D string, perhaps aluminum or tungsten-silver over braided or solid core steel.
But the Arioso A blew my mind, it has the most wonderful light and presence. I definitely prefer its sound to the Pirastro Perpetual Soloist Medium I had been running.

first time trying magnacore arioso and immediately I noticed a huge difference! I have been loyal to spiracore for a very long time. I don’t know why the D string was hard to embrace but, A, G, and C amazing! Maybe new favorite!

I LOVE these strings. They have a clear, warm, highly resonant sound with a nice, smooth, almost squishy feel that’s hard to describe. Compared to standard Magnacores, they’re much easier to play on. (The standards were tiring out my left hand after a few minutes).
The G and C were very metallic sounding at first, but broke in after about a week or two. They have a great, full sound now.
These are certainly the nicest strings I’ve ever played on, but I’m not completely sure they’re worth the price. That will depend on how well they hold up over time.
