The Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo commissioned Agnes de Mille and Aaron Copland to create a western ballet. The music was written in June, and orchestrated in September, 1942. The theme is basic; "How to get a suitable man." Rodeo was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera House on October 16, 1942.
A number of American folk songs are woven into the score providing rich rhythmic material.
