Louis Cherpitel was born in Mirecourt in 1876. The son of violinmaker, Nicholas Cherpitel, Louis apprenticed and worked in Mirecourt until 1900 when he moved to Paris to work with his brother-in-law, Charles Moinel. He returned to Mirecourt in 1903, but was asked to return to Paris in 1927 by Amedee Couesnon to help train a large number of apprentices in his Paris atelier. He remained in Paris for two years, and then returned to Mirecourt where he stayed until his death in 1940.

- Viola Information: A viola made by Louis Cherpitel, circa 1937. Two-piece spruce top of medium grain throughout. Two-piece maple back of strong to medium flame ascending horizontally. Ribs and headstock similar to back. Varnish of a red-brown color on a golden ground. LOB 407 mm.
