This work was composed in 1917. It is an Elegy in memory of Howells dear friend, Purcell Warren, a viola scholar and composer, whose life was taken in World War 1. As the composer said; "It is not in the least 'heroic', It was entirely dominated in my mind by the personality of my dear friend".
