Shostakovich transcribed these two miniatures, Elegy and Polka, for the Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume Quartet in 1931. Elegy is from Ekaterina Lvovna's aria from the opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Polka is from the ballet The Limpid Stream, Op. 22.
