Thin - also listed as weich, soft, light, or dolce.

Medium - also listed as mittel.

Thick - also listed as stark, forte, heavy or orchestra.

Example: Thomastik Dominant strings are available in three gauges; Weich, Mittel, or Stark.

Gut strings come in numbered gauges. The lowest number corresponds to the thinnest gauge.

Example: The Pirastro Eudoxa A string comes in four different gauges: 13 1/4, 13 1/2, 13 3/4, and 14.
