Interior Instrument Components

Note: The blocks and linings in the interior of the instrument provide a larger workable surface area in which the back, top, and ribs are glued together. The blocks and linings are usually made from spruce.

Violin Bottom      Violin Top

Bass Bar - A spruce bar fitted under the top plate to the bass side of the bridge, it distributes sound vibrations from the bridge along the top plate. Like the soundpost, it also supports the top plate.

Bottom Block - The bottom block anchors the endbutton.

Corner Blocks - The corner blocks reinforce the sides.

F Holes - Sound is projected from the F holes.

Lining - Linings reinforce the sides and provide structural integrity.

Soundpost - A spruce dowel that transfers sound vibrations from the top to the back of the instrument. It also supports the top and eases the stress from forty pounds of pressure exerted by the strings. It is fitted on the treble side of the bridge. The smallest variations in placement can greatly affect the sound.

Top Block - The top block anchors the neck.
