String End Shapes

At the tailpiece end, strings come in three shapes:

Ball End - Ball end strings are commonly used for steel, rope core, synthetic strings, and some gut strings. These strings are installed into the tailpiece or into post or double-prong style string adjusters, depending on core material. Refer to String Types for more information.

Loop End - Loop end strings are common for violin E strings and on occasion, viola A strings. Most players use a single prong string adjuster with loop end strings, but double prong and post style may also be used.

Knot End - Knots are used for the ends of lower pitched gut core strings. The loop associated with the knot prevents the knot and the string from unwinding. It is not intended to act as a loop end string and installing it onto a string adjuster will cause the string to break. Instead, use the knot portion to install the string directly into the tailpiece.
