Bass Sizing

Most adults will play a 3/4 size bass, which is considered standard size. Basses that are 4/4 size are less common and are usually only played by professionals. For a smaller adult or child, other sizes are available.

The following approach may be used to determine the correct size of double bass for a student:
  1. When standing, the endpin should be let out until the nut of the bass is near the forehead. The upper bout should rest against the stomach.
  2. The right hand should be able to bow at the proper position on the bass without too much bend in the arm.
