Barbara Barber's new series introduces an intonation system that teaches string players the layout of the fingerboard using four basic color-coded patterns. String Class Fingerboard Geography can be used as a daily warm-up routine and complements perfectly any beginning string method. Violin, viola, cello, and bass are included in one simple book.
Violin and Viola Fingerboard Geography add eight additional color-coded patterns with workouts on all parts of the fingerboard. Barber concludes these books with dozens of short Preview Exercises for pieces in the Suzuki Violin or Viola School. However, they may complement any teaching approach.
Now in a new translation, this book is Shin'ichi Suzuki's exploration of the concepts of his Talent Education philosophy through a personal narrative of discovery and experiences. Taken from the original Japanese directly into English, this new work provides fascinating insight into the mind of the master. A must for any teacher, player, or devotee of Dr. Suzuki's teachings. Size 8" x 5.5", 142 pages.
"Playing With Style" is a set of colorful concert pieces in a variety of styles, including tango, ragtime, and jazz. The pieces use effects such as glissando and tremolo and allow opportunities to explore chromaticisms, swing rhythms, and syncopation. In the string parts, the melody is passed around so that all members of the ensemble can have the opportunity to play the tune. Fingerings have been kept to a minimum and are normally included only for clarification of chromatic passages or where notes go out of first position.

These easy-to-read, progressive exercises by Joanne Martin develop a student's reading skills one stage at a time, with many repetitions at each stage. I Can Read Music is designed as a first note-reading book for students of string instruments who have learned to play using an aural approach such as the Suzuki Method, or for traditionally taught students who need extra note reading practice. Its presentation of new ideas is clear enough that it can be used daily at home by quite young children and their parents, with the teacher checking progress every week or two.
