These easy-to-read, progressive exercises by Joanne Martin develop a student's reading skills one stage at a time, with many repetitions at each stage. I Can Read Music is designed as a first note-reading book for students of string instruments who have learned to play using an aural approach such as the Suzuki Method, or for traditionally taught students who need extra note reading practice. Its presentation of new ideas is clear enough that it can be used daily at home by quite young children and their parents, with the teacher checking progress every week or two.

"Playing With Style" is a set of colorful concert pieces in a variety of styles, including tango, ragtime, and jazz. The pieces use effects such as glissando and tremolo and allow opportunities to explore chromaticisms, swing rhythms, and syncopation. In the string parts, the melody is passed around so that all members of the ensemble can have the opportunity to play the tune. Fingerings have been kept to a minimum and are normally included only for clarification of chromatic passages or where notes go out of first position.

Magic Carpet: Concert Pieces for the Youngest Beginner
The pieces in Magic Carpet use the same rhythms as the Twinkle Variations in the Suzuki Violin School Volume 1. The first eight pieces in the book are played on open E (or open A), and have an optional melody part, which may be played by teachers or more advanced students. Magic Carpet also includes five pieces which are designed to develop string crossings and finger placement. On the CD each piece is recorded at two speeds. The piano accompaniments and CD accompaniments are exciting and fun to play along with.
