"Playing With Style" is a set of colorful concert pieces in a variety of styles, including tango, ragtime, and jazz. The pieces use effects such as glissando and tremolo and allow opportunities to explore chromaticisms, swing rhythms, and syncopation. In the string parts, the melody is passed around so that all members of the ensemble can have the opportunity to play the tune. Fingerings have been kept to a minimum and are normally included only for clarification of chromatic passages or where notes go out of first position.

This method encourages creativity in the student by including variations to the tunes and illustrating how they can serve as a basis for improvisation. To assist in the development of ensemble skills, chords and lyrics, basic music theory, and demonstrations of such skills as backup and lead playing are included. A CD for listening and play-along captures the excitement of the music and aids instruction. This book is beneficial for both fiddle students and classical Suzuki violin students.
