Shadows in the House for String Orchestra (Grade 2)
Grade 2. This fast swing piece in G minor is reminiscent of the "Young Frankenstein" soft-shoe "Puttin' on the Ritz" (Cole Porter) or that wonderful spy-oriented animation from the early 1960s. Playfully sneaky, with a catchy, singable tune, this work features a tutti pizzicato section, as well as some melodic moments for bass and celli. All parts remain in first position, with a couple of "funky" accidentals thrown in for fun. The swing-eighth feel keeps the mood appropriately shadowy!
Bolero de Strings for String Orchestra and Latin Percussion (Grade 1.5)
Bass and percussion sections lay down the classic bolero groove, while the rest of the orchestra takes turns playing the lazy, singing, rolling melody. Enjoy a warm, tropical feel as the orchestra meanders through the key of D major. First violins provide interesting flourishes with both separate and slurred bowings. A third violin part is included for viola. Score and parts included.
Your middle school orchestra players will think that they've fallen through the rabbit hole into a cartoon land. This piece is all about effects: staccato, pizzicato, dynamics, and sudden bursts of color. Slightly chromatic with counting challenges (off beats in a fast tempo), this piece is worth the effort. Grade 2.
I Can Hear Ya Knockin' for String Orchestra (Grade 3.5)
3 - "I Can Hear Ya Knockin'" is a fast swing work in D minor featuring a
violin solo (optional solo written out, changes provided for open
improvisation). The title mimics the rhythm of the tune, first presented
in the viola and cello. This piece is a great opportunity for students
to learn flats and chromatic fingerings. Ranges are very reasonable for
all, allowing for concentration on rhythmic and stylistic elements. Includes score and parts for String Orchestra and Drum Set.
