Shadows in the House for String Orchestra (Grade 2)
Grade 2. This fast swing piece in G minor is reminiscent of the "Young Frankenstein" soft-shoe "Puttin' on the Ritz" (Cole Porter) or that wonderful spy-oriented animation from the early 1960s. Playfully sneaky, with a catchy, singable tune, this work features a tutti pizzicato section, as well as some melodic moments for bass and celli. All parts remain in first position, with a couple of "funky" accidentals thrown in for fun. The swing-eighth feel keeps the mood appropriately shadowy!
Grade 1. Imagine a hot summer afternoon, a park filled with people, and a big red balloon drifting over the crowd. The balloon man blows up balloon after balloon and hands them to the children. These vivid images are painted in this charming and delicate work. A rare Grade 1 in 3/4, it is perfect for developing counting and pizzicato skills. Written in D major, all four strings are used, and rhythms are simple. All parts use high 2s (except briefly in Violin 1) with a fun harmonic glissando special effect. At the very end, the balloons pop one by one.
Dances of Dido: Fear No Danger and Come Away for String Orchestra (Grade 2)
Ed Zunic has arranged this elegant piece by Henry Purcell for intermediate orchestra. The harmony parts play some chromatic figures (allowing for the introduction of extensions), and dotted rhythms allow the use of hooked bowings. This new arrangement is a lovely way to teach Baroque style to young students. Number of parts: 8-vln1, 8-vln2, 5-vla, 5-cello, 3-bass, score. Grade 2.
Another winner from Robert S. Frost! Rondo form provides three distinct
melodies and contrasting musical opportunities. Uses D and G Major and a
hint of B minor. Fantastic Learning Bank! Includes conductor's score and parts. 2:48
