Collection includes "Paranoid Antroid" and "House of Cards". Orchestral in scope, but rock by instrumentation, Radiohead pushed the musical limits of rock music with its 1997 landmark album OK Computer. This arrangement of the album's epic track "Paranoid Android" will challenge any string quartet. Tricky rhythms and time-signature changes are just the tip of the iceberg for this complex piece of music. Polar opposite in tone to "Paranoid Android" is the Grammy-nominated song "House of Cards" (In Rainbows, 2007), an uncharacteristically relaxed Radiohead love ballad. Melodically deadpan, the crux of the song lies in the rhythmic groove created by the guitar figure faithfully played in this string quartet arrangement by the viola. Score and Parts.
This arrangement of the widely known Civil War-era fiddle tune "Soldier's Joy" will be a hit with your ensemble or school string program. Challenge yourself and your fellow musicians with the traditional melody of this American hoedown. "Whiskey Before Breakfast" is yet another fun addition to your repertoire. Covered by the likes of Doc Watson and the String Cheese Incident, this tune has strong roots in the British Isles. This lively arrangement offers an accompaniment that takes on a traditional American "boom-chuck" bowing pattern. Score and Parts.
Tango, the dance form that originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the early 20th century, has been brought back to the forefront of string players' consciousness with these two expressive compositions. Play "Four Tango Postcards" with attitude. This snappy piece consists of four exciting movements: vivace, allegro vivo e molto ritmico, moderato espressivo, and vivo. And execute the modern-flavored "Tango Nuevo" with fun and precision. In it, you'll engage in passionate lines and a bravura finish. Score and Parts.
Orginal Latin Songs for Beginning String Orchestra
String ensembles will enjoy "Mimi's Minor Mambo", a dance tune inspired by the traditional Afro-Cuban music played by the Caribbean island nations' charanga ensembles. Charanga, sometimes called the grandfather of salsa, combines several European musical ideas such as harmony, instrumentation, and form with the complex rhythmic structures of Afro-Cuban music. "Sambasaurus" is inspired by Brazilian samba. Expand your skill sets by playing these two originals with your string quintet or student string orchestra.
Set includes one score and a complete set of string orchestra parts.
Note: We feel that the two pieces in this collection require a more advanced player. Some of the skills required are: syncopation, off beats, accidentals, and playing up to 5th position for violin.
"Red-Haired Boy" is a traditional Irish reel that has become a standard tune in the American old-time and bluegrass musicians' repertoire. This arrangement combines non-traditional phrase structures and an extended introduction as well as syncopated accompaniment patterns and variations on the basic melody. "Deer in the Headlights", based on the traditional American fiddle tune "Forked Deer", is a "hoe-down" contrasted with a funky ostinato melody, featuring prominent pauses - the deer caught in the headlights. This tune is a favorite with composer and arranger Carlson's audiences.
Includes: Score, 8 Violin I, 8 Violin II, 3 Viola, 8 Violin III (Viola substitute), 5 Cello, 3 Double Bass
Turn your orchestra into a big band for the night with Duke Ellington's swing classics. The loping bass line, the sinewy horn parts, and the intricate harmonies of "Echoes of Harlem" are translated into an artful arrangement for string orchestra. The warm, chocolaty tones of the viola really shine in this piece. In this delightful rendition of "I'm Just a Lucky So and So", the violist plays the saxophone and trombone parts while the second violinist sings. The lighthearted song has been recorded by everyone from Tony Bennett to Ella Fitzgerald to Diana Krall. Includes a full set of score and parts.
