All in first position with simple rhythms, string-friendly keys, and a variety of bowing styles, this book is the perfect companion to any elementary method. Offering seven original duets, this collection features vivid personality and character for elementary strings.
1. Starry Night
2. Almost Together
3. Jamaican Spice
7. Mimi the Cat
Grade 2. This piece for middle school students features a musical portrait of pirates and crashing waves. The 6/8 A section is in D major, featuring hooked bowings and good arpeggio exercises. The B section, in 2/4 and D minor with melody initially in the low strings, has the character of a sea chantey. It can be played all in first position and will require extensions to C sharp for upper strings and cello.
Shadows in the House for String Orchestra (Grade 2)
Grade 2. This fast swing piece in G minor is reminiscent of the "Young Frankenstein" soft-shoe "Puttin' on the Ritz" (Cole Porter) or that wonderful spy-oriented animation from the early 1960s. Playfully sneaky, with a catchy, singable tune, this work features a tutti pizzicato section, as well as some melodic moments for bass and celli. All parts remain in first position, with a couple of "funky" accidentals thrown in for fun. The swing-eighth feel keeps the mood appropriately shadowy!
